Description:

Lord Horatio Nelson headquartered his fleet in Antigua until 1789, and it remained in use by the Royal Navy until 1889. Now a national park, Nelson's Dockyard and the adjacent Ft. Berkeley contain restored buildings, the Admiral's House Museum, and scattered relics of the old days.

Overlooking peaceful English Harbor is the 14 room restored Copper & Lumber Store Hotel. This former supply store for Nelson's Caribbean fleet has been transformed into a gracious inn. Hardwood floors, warm brick, timbered ceilings, leather armchairs and sofas create that old-world charm unique in the West Indies.

Touted as the finest example of Georgian British architecture in the Caribbean, the rooms and suites are furnished with antiques, old sailing prints, steamer trunks, ceiling fans, faux gas lamps, and four-poster canopy beds exuding the gracious elegance of 18th century England. The rooms open into the center courtyard filled with tropical plants or overlook the busy English Harbor, dotted with anchored yachts and sailboats year-round.

Although there is no beach right at the hotel, guests are welcome to use the Galleon Beach Club beach and watersports facilities just on the opposite side of the harbor. A small boat ferry service will shuttle guests around the harbor. Visit the museum right next door, poke around in the various shops now inhabiting other restored naval buildings, mingle with sailors from all
over the world, hike out to Ft. Berkeley on the point, or up to Shirley Heights for fabulous views.

Two restaurants are located in the Copper & Lumber Store Hotel. The Wardroom Restaurant is a charming old English dining room opening onto the tropical courtyard filled with bougainvillea. An international cuisine mixed with all the flavors of the Caribbean make this a favorite with yachties, visitors, and guests. A major meeting place in the Dockyard, the traditional English Mainbrace Pub features draft beer, snacks, and a casual menu. Try their traditional newspaper-wrapped fish and chips. Several other excellent restaurants are nearby, including The Admiral's Inn, The Inn at English Harbour, Abracadabra, The Galley Bar & Restaurant, The Dock Bar & Grill,
Colombo's, Le Cap Horn, and Famous Mauro's pizza.

Located 30 minutes from the airport and 20 minutes from St. Johns, Nelson's Dockyard is the hub of sailing activity during the annual Classic Regatta and Antigua Sailing Week festivities in late spring.
